Oh wow...what a fun holiday it seems you have had! I love the idea of the Christmas pickle...going to have institute that game next year!
I think the shadows are because you are too close to them when you are framing your shot with a flash...not sure -- but try taking a step back and zooming in with your lens and see if it doesn't solve the problem.
Finally...I love the advent calendar -- I had seen one by Hollye -- how can I make one too?
